Swindon is set to become a culinary hotspot this weekend as the International Food Fair arrives at STEAM on Saturday, June 29. Representing 14 countries from Pakistan to Mexico, this festival promises a delightful gastronomic journey for all attendees.
Organised by Connecting Communities, the event is more than just a feast for the senses. Chair Tajwar Hassan explains, “Food is one thing I think we all have in common. We all enjoy food. So we feel that this is a good way to bring people together.” With this ethos, the festival aims to unite the community while raising funds for charity.
The festival features a variety of dishes, with mains priced around £7 and sides or snacks available for just £1 each. Expect to savour Pakistani biryani, Palestinian falafel, Mexican chilli, and Somali lamb, all lovingly prepared by local cooks who donate their time and ingredients. “Every penny is going to charity,” Tajwar emphasises. “I’m not aware of any event that works in this way, where so many people cook for the bigger cause.”
This year, the chosen causes are Julia’s House children’s hospice in England and a free clinic in an Egyptian village, which will benefit from the purchase of an ultrasound machine. Last year’s event raised an impressive £18,000 for The Harbour Project and other initiatives in Nigeria and Palestine, with over 1,000 attendees.
For families, the festival offers more familiar fare like pasta and pizza, along with entertainment such as face painting and henna. Vegetarian and vegan options will also be available, ensuring everyone can join in the fun.
Reflecting on past events, Tajwar notes, “We can really see the benefits. It’s also a good opportunity for refugees to feel a part of our community because they get to run some of our stalls. It helps to integrate them into our society and gives them the chance to give back.”
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to enjoy international cuisine while supporting worthy causes. The event runs from 11:30am to 4pm, and entry is free, though donations are encouraged. Come with an appetite and leave with a heart full of goodwill!
