Top Five Barbecue Spots in Swindon

When the sun is shining, there’s nothing quite like the smell of a smoky grill to bring friends and family together. However, finding the perfect barbecue spot can be tricky due to fire risks and local regulations. Fear not, Swindon residents! Here are the top five barbecue spots around Swindon where you can enjoy a sizzling summer feast.

1. Best for Bringing Your Own for Free: Coate Water

Surprisingly, Coate Water allows you to bring your own barbecue free of charge. If you prefer, you can also hire a large barbecue from the rangers for £70, which includes a third of the horse field. For groups over 100, the price triples. Check Swindon Borough Council’s website for a map of designated BBQ areas.

2. For Big Groups: Lydiard Park

Lydiard Park offers a more structured barbecue experience. While you can’t bring your own grill, you can hire a large barbecue plot for £68 or a small one for £47. The BBQ site is conveniently located to the right of the car park when entering via Hook Street. Available from 29 March to 31 October, you can book your spot on their website.

3. Best for Free Parking: Mouldon Hill Country Park

Mouldon Hill Country Park is a popular summer destination for picnics and barbecues. With free parking and several footpaths and walkways, it’s an ideal spot to enjoy a meal and then take a leisurely stroll. Haydon Wick Parish Council has no listed restrictions, making it a hassle-free option.

4. Best for Swimming and Beach: Cotswold Country Park

Combine swimming and barbecuing at Cotswold Country Park and Beach. You can hire a barbecue from 10am to 5.30pm, complete with 3kg of coal. Prices are £60 on weekends and £40 midweek for up to 24 guests. After your meal, take a dip in the swimming lagoon and relax on the beach.

5. Best for Freedom: Have a Picnic Instead

Due to fire risks, many places like Savernake Forest have banned barbecues. However, picnics are a fantastic alternative. With a picnic, your options are endless—from Swindon’s Town Gardens and Queens Park to the scenic Savernake Forest. Plus, picnics are free and you won’t have to worry about burnt sausages. Just remember to tidy up afterwards!

So, gather your friends, pack your picnic blankets, and head to one of these fantastic spots for a memorable summer barbecue or picnic in Swindon!
